In the preface of his book on counseling McLeod (2003, p. xvii) is wondering how this practice appear to be so simple and yet so vastly complicated. What could be simpler than being and interested interviewer and listener? Still, the complexity of what is involved in professional interaction practices can be difficult to pinpoint. In this presentation we argue that an analytical approach to the professional’s own practice provides valuable knowledge of how to practice guidance and counseling. Furthermore, we argue that this must be addressed as an active part of the master programme’s pedagogy. We propose an introduction of video observation as a tool to bridge the practical experience and analytical distance where collective academic supervision process is brought in to enhance the transformation processes. In our discussion we draw on findings from a recent developmental project and video observations of group supervision sessions at the Danish Master Program in Guidance.
