CBT Training Objectives

University of Toronto, Department of Psychiatry

Psychotherapy Program, CBT Subcommittees

The following are standards for resident training in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). These include minimum expectations for basic training in CBT as well as minimum objectives for residents seeking advanced training. It is not expected that residents will necessarily be able to meet these requirements in one setting; however, they should be able to meet these objectives as they rotate through different clinical settings during the course of their residency. Comprehensive training will include observing and conducting cognitive and behavioural assessments and treatments with a variety of clinical populations. In addition, residents will be expected to become familiar with the research literature on the efficacy of cognitive and behavioural treatments for various disorders as well as the variables that influence treatment outcome. Residents will be encouraged to approach treatment from a scientist practitioner model and to evaluate the impact of their treatments using a variety of single case experimental designs. Finally, residents will be expected to learn to integrate cognitive and behavioural strategies with other empirically based treatment modalities when appropriate.
