ETHNOPSYCHOLOGY

Explanatory notes

  1. Ethnopsychology is the science which is based on interdisciplinary approach. Ethnopsychology takes basic ideas of various psychological schools and movements and has 3 branches: cross-cultural psychology, psychological anthropology and psychology of intergroup relations. It integrates knowledge obtained in different science with the aim to explain many complex phenomena of human behavior in modern society (for example the current context of enlargement of the European space and the intensification of migratory flows demand the study of attitudes towards immigration, processes of acculturation, adaptation etc). Recent cross-cultural theory and research may compose a fertile ground for promoting a holistic view of human life as a continuous interaction between culture and the individual psycho-social characteristics within a ‘universe’ in which people have to solve common human problems.

II. Course "Ethnopsychology " is intended for senior undergraduate psychology . Its introduction to the training program for psychologists is explained by awareness of the importance of ethno-psychological knowledge at the present stage of development of Russia's multi-ethnic society in the global multicultural space, which makes the task of increasing the level of training in practical psychological activities.



The purpose of the special course: to familiarize students with the basic concepts and the problems of ethnic psychology, to prepare them for professional work in the world that is characterized by intensification of inter-ethnic cooperation.

Tasks of the course: to introduce students with the “problem area” of this science, its historical development, current status and the basic concepts and terms; to form interdisciplinary scientific point of view ("ethno-psychological thinking") through exploring the concepts of related disciplines: ethnography, sociology, historical and cultural studies etc. taking into consideration all controversial trends and challenges of this science methodology; to give students opportunity to get to know latest data in the field of ethnic psychology and theories of leading scientific schools; to help students to form tolerance towards people of other cultures based on the elimination of their own prejudices and negative stereotypes; to introduce students with modern methods of training for cross-cultural interaction, methods of the study of ethnic stereotypes, prejudice and ethnic identity; to help in developing skills of ethno-psychological analysis of the phenomena associated with migration, acculturation, ethnic tensions and clashes, modern trends of development of ethnic groups.

Place of the course in an educational program of specialty "Psychology" with specialization in “social psychology”

Course is built with support of the following courses : cultural studies, philosophy, political science, sociology , psychology of conflict , social psychology, psychology of personality, psychology of communication. In turn, it is related to other special courses addressing problems of ethnic psychology.


Requirements :
As a result students should: know the basic concepts of ethnic psychology, the history of the formation and development of its logic, theoretical approaches and practical working methods to diagnose, predict and correct inter-ethnic relations; master system of basic knowledge and skills needed for professional work in a multicultural society in Russia and abroad with the aim to avoid mistakes in their future professional activity; develop a professional attitude to the complex processes taking place in a modern multi-ethnic society; apply psychological tools to objects of ethno-psychological research.
The competencies developed in the framework of the discipline :
• Knowledge of the basic the concept of ethnic psychology at various stages of its formation
• ability to compare the psychological theories of the past and present situation in ethnic psychology based on the analysis of the historical background of its development
• understanding of the theoretical and methodological bases of formation of the body of ethno-psychological knowledge
• knowledge of the main methods of study of ethnic identity, ethnic stereotypes and prejudices,
• improving of the overall ethno-cultural competence to exercise effective inter-ethnic dialogue
At the end of the course students have final evaluation - exam
