COURSE TITLE: DISCOURSE ANALYSIS
COURSE INSTRUCTORS: Dr Zouhair Maalej
COURSE OBJECTIVE

The objective of the course is to introduce students to the general features of discourse, and to initiate them to identify and appreciate discourse markers and grasp organization typical of most discourse types.



COURSE DESCRIPTION


The course introduces students to the main features of discourse, and familiarizes them with the most important concepts, the major issues, and some of the most important approaches to discourse analysis. Knowledge of the basic concepts will serve as a toolkit that the students can use in advanced discourse studies courses such as critical discourse analysis.
COURSE METHODOLOGY & EVALUATION

Basically, class work consists of a set of lectures based on the course outline below. Handouts will be distributed, and need to be supplemented by further readings to be assigned weekly as headway is made in the course. Regular attendance is important. The testing procedure will involve either a set of questions or an essay question reflecting knowledge of the theoretical issues dealt with in the course.
